From 1967 to 1972 David was assigned as a Mission Coordinator and crew member on the ARIA (Apollo/Range Instrumentation Aircraft) used to track and relay communications for the Apollo Spacecraft during launch and reentry. This culminated in his playing a leading role during the Reentry of Apollo 13 when he directed the relay of communications from ARIA 4 located 31,000 feet over the splashdown and recovery site providing the first confirmation to the rest of the world that the Apollo 13 spacecraft and crew had survived their return to
Earth. Captain Dunn followed this with an assignment to NORAD Cheyenne Mountain AFS where he organized and became the first Chief of the NORAD Launch Correlation Unit (LCU), the still-existing foremost military facility dedicated to preventing accidental nuclear war.
